Принят в 1887 по инициативе комиссии Дауэса [Dawes Commission; Dawes, Henry Laurens], с важными поправками в 1889, 1891, 1906 и 1910. Регулировал передачу земель резерваций, находящихся в общинной собственности, в индивидуальную собственность (в размере: 160 акров главе семьи, 80 акров неженатому индейцу старше 18 лет и 40 акров - младше 18 лет). Оставшиеся после распределения земли продавались, деньги шли в фонд племени. Отменен в 1934 Законом о реорганизации индейской администрации [ Indian Reorganization Act].
